FAQ’s – As we regularly receive various questions and employment advise requests from prospective candidates below is a selection of some of the most popular questions we receive and which may be of assistance to our prospective candidates.

Question 1. Can you tell me what the basic training requirements are to be considered for employment by Fastnet Shipping?

Answer 1. As a minimum all candidates for any marine based role must have a completed the full set of Basic STCW training

The STCW Basic Training course includes:

  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques (STCW A-VI/1-1)
  • STCW Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention (STCW A-VI/1-2)
  • STCW Elementary First Aid (STCW A-VI/1-3)
  • STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (STCW A-VI/1-4)

In addition to the basic STCW training each candidate must have a current and valid seafarers medical (Offshore medical or similar will not suffice)

Note:

  • All STCW Certs without an official expiry date stamped on each cert will have to be renewed every 3 years.
  • All STCW Certs with an official expiry date stamped on each cert which is more than 5 years after the issue date will not be accepted, such certs however will be valid use up to 5 years after the date of issue/exam.

Question 2. What Qualifications do I need to be considered for employment as a deckhand by Fastnet Shipping?

Answer 2: To be considered for the position of deckhand by Fastnet Shipping you must be in receipt of all the basic training outlined in Question 1, however preference will be given to candidates whom have completed one or more of the following additional items of training. VHF SRC (GMDSS Course), MCA Approved Engine Course, STCW Efficient Deckhand Course and whom possess Certified and Proven Boat Handling Skills.

Question 3. What Qualifications do I need to be considered for employment as a Skipper or Master by Fastnet Shipping?

Answer 3: Our Training Requirements for Skippers can vary considerably based on the area of operation, flag state and certifying authority manning requirements for the respective vessel. But as a minimum each prospective candidate should have a current and valid Masters Certificate of Competency (Such as Master 200GT or 500 GT Near Continental, Middle or Unlimited Trade) each candidate must also hold all current and valid certs ( STCW Training and a Valid Medical) to further support and validate their CoC. Preference will be given to candidates whom have experience on workboats and have endorsements to support the same, similary preferece wil also be given to candidates whom have proven and documented engineering abilities or certifications.

Question 4. Can you tell me what rotations your crew work?

Answer 4: Our work rota is decided based on the project location and vessel requirements but in general we work with a 3 week on 3 week off rotation.
